This week I've chosen a game that was never released outside of japan. It has a sequel already out, and another one on the way. That's right folks, I'm talking about Star Ocean! (SNES) Title screen This game contains super good graphics, really awesome sound and music... and a great storyline. Not to mention the fact that most of the unique aspects of Star Ocean 2 were borrowed from this game. Skills, item creation. private actions, they're all here! This game was far before it's time, I'm surprised they could fit it on a SNES cartridge... It's PS1 quality people! Well that's enough ranting for now... let's get into the review... and stuff... Storyline Let's face it, I haven't ever seen a better storyline in any snes rpg ever. The game is highly futuristic, yet at the same time not... The captain of a spaceship ended up on an undeveloped planet, and met some of the locals... he ends up trying to help them defeat some bad guys who are trying to tuyrn the whole planet's inhabitants to stone for their unknown benefit. some talking There's a lot of dialogue in this game... and keep in mind that it was japanese. But I've uploaded a shoddy english translation of it that can get you through the game easily enough... menu and items are still a little messed, but all in due time young grasshoppers. Graphics As I stated before, graphics are awesome in this game... They're up to a quality I didn't think you'd ever be able to see in a SNES game. See for yourself: battle screenies for you more ehh how about another one :) You actually needed a special graphics pack to play this game, because the graphics are so advanced... Music/sound Never heard better midis in my whole life. It's as if they weren't midis, but you know that they had to have been. Very great quality, some of them seem reminescent of Star Ocean 2, or more likely some of Star Ocean 2's music sounds reminescent of Star Ocean. Gameplay Great battle system, where you and 3 allies fight it out in a real time battle situation... No waiting for turns or anything... just hit A to pick someone to attack... Magic and stuff is cool in the game too... all around great system the have there... another battle screenie Menu's are awesome. In this game, you have skill points that you put on skills that you buy in the skill guild. When you learn certain levels of these certain skills, you master a specialty skill, where you can use that to make certain kinds of items. For example, if you put one level on "good eye" "kitchen knife" and "recipe" you will learn the specialty skill "cooking" where you can take raw ingredients and turn them into edible food. Very great syetm they have there :) menu screenie another menu screenie Not to mention the fact that if you have the talent required for the skill you want to use, it will have a better chance of working, but if you don't have the talent, you will fail quite regularly. Just like in real life. Every character has a favorite food, and if they eat it, they will fully restore their hp and mp. Battle tactics make you allies do exactly what you want them to do in battle, nothing stupid. This game is by far, the best SNES rpg ever made. I highly recommend it. And you can get it here That's all for now! See ya next time! ~Ramza |
