Strings
Ok first off. You need to learn a little about the guitar. They usually have 6 strings, these strings all have standard tuning notes. The 1st string (the thinest one) This is called the E string. The one above that is the B string. Then the G, D, A and finnally the biggest one is E (you get the idea?). It is easy for me to tell you this so I can relate to them in further use.
Tab
ok, now you need to know how to read tab so you can tell what to do with your notes. Tab is a form of relating the strings of the guitar and the frets (the bars on the neck of the guitar where you place your fingers to play a note.) to text form. The strings will be indicated as the notes that I just explained. The frets will be indicated by on the string the number of what fret you want to play to be indicated. For instance if I wanted to place my finger on the 6th string E (biggest one) and on the 1st fret of that string which is the first fret below the the nut at the top of the guitar. This may seem hard to understand, So I will show you an example in tab form. E---------------------------- B---------------------------- G---------------------------- D---------------------------- A---------------------------- E--1---1---1---1---1---- You should be playing the first fret on the 6th string the number of time the number is displayed. So you should play it 5 times. You have press your fingers hard onto the fret to produce a sufficient sound. This may hurt in the beggining, but soon you will build hard skin on your finger tips and it won't hurt. I suggest you just practice until it really hurts, and then stop and do some more later.
Chords
Ok, now you are going to strum all the strings on the guitar and place your fingers on the frets to get the right sound. The first chord I will show you is the G major chord. The same tab rules apply E--3------------------------ 4 pinky B--3------------------------ 3 ring G--0------------------------ D--0------------------------ A--2------------------------ 2 middle E--3------------------------ 1 index Now the frets are indicated. 3 means the 3rd fret etc... One that might catch you out though is the 0. This means you don't play any fret. Its called an open note. you just play the note alone. I have also indicated the fingers you should use to play this chord. This will help you get the structure right. Again you try and get the notes playing clean by pressing down on the fret hard. Also, try not to damp the open notes with your hand by accident. Well, I think that is all for this lesson. If you want to practice some more until our next lesson, you can try some of these chords that I will write out for you. E Major E--0------------------------ B--0------------------------ G--1------------------------ 1 index D--2------------------------ 3 ring A--2------------------------ 2 middle E--0------------------------ A Major E--0------------------------ B--2------------------------ 3 ring G--2------------------------ 2 middle D--2------------------------ 1 Index A--0------------------------ E--x------------------------ NB: x means you don't play the string at all D Major E--2------------------------ 2 middle B--3------------------------ 3 ring G--2------------------------ 1 Index D--0------------------------ A--x------------------------ E--x------------------------ There, that should be enough to keep you going. So, keep practicing =D |
