» reviews User Review of The Goddess Blade
Score: 75% Written On: Monday, October 10th, 2005 at 07:56 pm Story: (13/20) Being a movie, there is alot more focus on the storyline in this project than most other rpgmaker games, which is somewhat refreshing. Rodpop successfully delivers the story through excellent use of dialogue. However, the story itself has original and overused elements. Although head and shoulders above 95% of rpgmaker proejects, The Goddess Blade is not without fault in story. The background to the main character is interesting and her actions towards the beginning of the story are not painfully predictable. However, as the story advances the originality of the story line seems to ebb away and the viewer is inflicted with many overused ideas such as an evil that was sealed away but is coming back and a holy sword that only the "chosen one" can wield in order to defeat the evil. I was enjoying the storyline very much up until the point where the legend of the Godess Blade and the two Gods are revealed. This cliched backstory horribly scarred an otherwise well written plot. Characters: (17/20) Characterisation in The Goddess Blade is very strong indeed. Inparticular, the heroine (Carrie) who breaks the steroetypical mould and is a really strong character. However, the two supporting characters; Isacc, and Lloyd, I was not so impressed with. Isaac takes upon the role of being secretly smitten with the main character but not able to show it. Another annoying thing I found was that on almost every occassion, even though the heroine was a competent fighter, Isaac still had to go in and rescue her. Lloyd was also unoriginal as he plays the character who is trying to revive the ancient evil and is in many ways just the typical "rival" we see in all rpgmaker games. However, I thought it was a good idea to make Lloyd Carries boyfriend as this allowed us to see this characters' motivations from a slightly different angle. Gameplay: (20/20) The gameplay suprised me greatly, and actually turned out pretty good. In the game all you do is participate in the battles. Although the standard attack/spell system was used, Rodpop got the difficulty just right and I was challenged in every single battle and I really had to think in order to complete each one. The end boss was also very enjoyable. Graphics: (7/20) This is where the game was let down the most. As far as I can see, nothing but RT and RT add-on we used. The maps weren't constructed particulary well either. However, there was good use of backgrounds etc which brings the score up slightly. However, I would have liked to see better quality chipsets and charsets used. Audio: (18/20) I loved the music. There were some pieces I had heard before, but a good selection was made. In particular, the battle music was very good and really added to the atmosphere of the game. The Sound affects were also all used in the right place. However, there were a few occassions where boring and uninteresting tracks were used. But overall, very good. Conclussion: (75/100) Overall, an enjoyable movie that is well worth a download. If this game were ever to be remade, I would advise that a better back story is invented, and Necrion (the evil god) should be replaced with something more original. Something that would be hard to get rid of is the Goddess Sword itself as it is very central to the game, which is a pity as it is horribly unoriginal. On the other hand, the dialogue is excellent, and the challenging battles help break up the story. The story is easily to follow and is involving to a certain extent. The Goddess Blade is a very good attempt at an RPGMaker project and it was a good and original idea to make a movie rather than a game. Back to Orginal Review |
