Well, after a long period of not writing anything in the way of reviews, I\'m finally back with some material to offer. The game I am reviewing is Stories from Gaia: The War. Is it any good? Is it worth the download? Is it more fun under the influence of drugs? Well, that last one might not be answered, but lets look deeper into this!

Gameplay
4/10

I, personally, didn\'t find the \"dungeons\" to be too terribly fun. Most of them were big areas with high encounter rates. Also, maybe this is more of a fault of RPG Maker 2003 than the author itself, but battles seemed to go on for a long time. It\'s not that the monsters had a lot of HP, it\'s that attacks seemed to miss often and the ATB bar seemed to fill kind of slowly (well, beyond the first area of the game at least). In the moments you\'re not in a dungeon, the game seemed decent enough. The world map seemed to have a couple of optional areas to explore (Although that meant more dungeons...) and the towns usually had some stuff to do. My main concern here (Besides the encounter rate) is the balence of the game. I mean, your curing spell seems to heal 50 HP when you have about 1000 HP. Same goes for items... although they seemed to be pretty cheap, so I guess it\'s not all that bad. On the plus side you get a hammer in the game that allows you to smash rocks, which I thought was fairly interesting. Also, you learn spells through books instead of by leveling up... which, I guess, is either good or bad depending on your preference.

Graphics
5.5/10

This game was pretty much all RTP. I have nothing against RTP, but usage was... okay... I guess. Some parts looked good and some parts looked kind of blah, but that could be just me. One thing that I found odd is that, in a RM2K3 game, the author insisted on using the RM2K chipsets, which are the same as the RM2K3 ones except not as sharp... oh well. This game has original sprite-sized battle sprites for the characters, and they actually look pretty sharp. However, I did spot a \"error\" or two with them... but it wasn\'t too big of a deal. The other thing is that the placement of the sprites seemed to be a little weird... like, your main character looks like she\'s off the ground in a couple of the battles. Even though battle animation files were RTP, the actual animations weren\'t, and they looked pretty good for the most part. There was also some custom poses and a little screen panning that was visually pleasing, which contributes to bumping up the score.

Sounds and Tunes
5.5/10

Once again, a lot of RTP. Some of the RTP songs are pretty good, but I don\'t like them that much. The thing that particularly annoyed me is that the battle and victory themes are RTP... that\'s probably more of a matter of preference though. The non-RTP music was good. I heard some Legend of Legaia MP3s (I think they were MP3s anyway) and I believe there was some custom/edited music in there was well. I just wish that there was more of this music in the game. Also, this game had some custom sounds, which I thought added to the experience.

Story
6.5/10

This is probably the best part of the whole game. Basically, the game revolves around a war. Whoo hoo, nothing original there, right? Well, the thing that I liked was how there was no real good side or bad side, which makes the game much more interesting. Because of this, I always wanted to find out what happened next. Characters were pretty interesting... I guess their personalities weren\'t too terribly dynamic but I like the fact that the main character appears to be a mother and not a 14 year old boy going on a adventure. My main concern here is the grammar. There were quite a few words that weren\'t spelled right and there was some cases where the game said \"U\" instead of \"you.\" This really brings the story down... lower than it should be. I mean, perfect grammar isn\'t needed (but it\'s prefered) but it should be a little better in my opinion. Some of the dialogue was a little corny, but I can deal with that.

Features
6.5/10

An arena, a gambling minigame (I believe anyway), a neat little item box thing that gives you a random item when you pay it, and a couple of optional areas. This, with some custom pictures, gives this a pretty good score, but it was nothing that really blew me away or anything.

Calculation
((4+5.5+5.5+6.5+6.5)x 2 = 56)

Overall rating:
56 - With a little work...

At the moment, this game shows promise. If the author can just get non-RTP music, make the graphics a little better, get the spelling errors fixed up, and lower the encounter rate, then this game could be great. However, as it stands, This might be interesting to look at if you\'re bored and have a high-speed connection, but nothing too outstanding.
