This being Avenged Sevenfold\'s third album, and major label debut,
greatness or complete failure is to be expected.
City Of Evil marks a decidedly different direction for the band who\'s previous album
Waking The Fallen is something of a hardcore masterpiece.
Gone are the blood-curdling screams and the punkier songwriting,
replaced by long, dramatic, power metal songs and vocals more akin to Axl Rose, James Hetfield,
and other Thrash and Glam metal vocalists.
At it\'s best this combination can be stunning, At it\'s worst briefly boring, but never bad.
Although it took a few spins for me to really appreciate this album,
and admittedly I was rather disapointed when I first heard opener \"Beast and the Harlot\",
I now find most of this CD to be very good.
Following \"Beast and the Harlot\", Which sounds quite heavy until the first chorus,
is the slightly similar \"Burn it Down\" .
(Indeed throughout the entire album there seem to be similarity between songs,
seeming to connect them quite well. Sometimes this is pulled off well, but others
it just makes it sound like a little too much of the same)
Standout tracks on the first half of the CD include \"Blinded in Chains\",
\"Bat Country\", and \"Trashed and Scattered\". All of which follow \"Burn it Down\"
in that respective order.
Track 6, \"Seize the Day\" is an unashamed ballad, Very much a tribute to Guns \'n\' Roses but,
still an awesome song.
\"Sidewinder\" Is easily my favorite track, starting out heavy and ending with accoustic guitar.
\"The Wicked End\", and \"Strength of the World\" both hint at something more epic,
both great songs,
and \"Betrayed\" has the dubious honor of being the only throw away song on the album.
Closer \"M.I.A.\" continues in the vein of \"The Wicked End\", and \"Strength of the World\"
but ends on a sour note, as singer M. Shadows\'
(Who recently burst a blood vessel screaming thus having to undergoe vocal surgery,
thus no longer screaming) newly healed voice starts to give out.
As far as musicianship goes both lead guitarist Zacky Vengeance
and drummer The Reverend have improved dramatically, elevating themselves to the status of
Guitar Hero, and Drum Hero respectivly.
Overall Avenged Sevenfold have truly reached great heights on this CD,
making people disregard their faux-metal names and ugly clothes,
and just listen to the music. If you\'re looking for another Waking The Fallen
you will be severly disapointed, but if you\'re just looking for a great record...
Look no further.
