I dig giant robots.
You dig giant robots.
Chicks dig giant robots.
Who doesn't dig giant robots?

Front mission 4 is a wonder of the modern world. Square Enix putting together a good strategy rpg was something previously unheard of but evidently they decided to pull their heads out of their asses and put together a good game.

The storyline is pretty simple. In the future giant robots have replaced tanks as the main combat units of the world. These giant robots are called wanzers(Won-zuhr). A mysterious force has attacked a German base, and in order to avoid any accusations a team of people have been brough in to figure out who the attackers are. Also, at the same time, Vensuala is trying to become independant from the bigger governmental unit that rules half the globe. Your either one of the people investigating the attack, or some soldiers down in Venesuala who are trying to desert with a lot of stolen gold, and either way, its fun.

The game play is pretty much a final fantasy tactics meets armored core kind of thing. You follow storyline from battle to battle. The battles are final fantasy tactis-like and hold all of the same fun as that classic strategy RPG.

You get to customize your giant robots with parts you buy from a wanzer shop. You can completely change any characters robots, but each character becomes specialized to a type of fighting style that comes with the type of robot. In other words, you dont want to turn a guy with a close range bot into a guy with a sniper bot. You can even customize color schemes on your mechs. It's as much fun as the cuztomizing on Armored Core.

The music is original music, by one of the guys who did music for the final fantasy games that were out before Squaresoft became Square Enix. The graphics are stunning, and the voiceovers are amazing. The cutscene graphics are on par with anything else of the day if not slightly better, earning a great score.

Front Mission 4 pulled Square Enix out of the gutter in my mind. Up until Front Mission 4 and StarOcean: Til the End of Time Square Enix has survived only on the fanatic fans who bought and enjoyed FFX, FFX-2, and FFXI. With Front Mission 4 and StarOcean, they look to finally make a name for themselves that doesnt have just final fantasy as their main games.
