![]() Gears of War Developed By: Epic GamesReview By: Zeph Written on: Sunday, December, 03rd, 2006 at 01:44:41 am Rating: 90% Site: here System: Xbox 360 This is the very game Microsoft has been touting around, saying this is the game that will redefine shooters and be the Halo of the 360. Is it a Halo-killer? In short, hell yes. Graphics: 10/10 This is the best looking game ever. Every single thing in this game has been intricately detailed. And I have encoutered no lag, ever. Everything looks amazing. I don\'t need to get into any long-winded explanation with this. Just look at the screenshots down there. Epic Games, Unreal Engine 3, I salute you. Story: 6/10 Unfortunately, this is the only part where the game struggles to keep up with Halo. It has a paltry, standard sci-fi shooter story. The world lived in peace for a long time and, just when the economy boomed and standard of living increased, big mean aliens called \"Locust\" popped out from under the planet and started mass-murdering humans. The day they popped out is known as \"Emergence Day.\" 14 years after this date, you see yourself in a prison. You are Marcus Fenix, a felon who is busted out of his cell to help fight the Locust. A little later, you meet up with General Hoffman and learn that there\'s a big bomb designed to blow the shit out of the Locust. You\'re to help find the resonator, a sonic device that maps Locust tunnels. As you can see, this is standard stuff for a sci-fi shooter and so this is the only part that really suffers. Gameplay: 10/10 The gameplay is based on one thing: cover. And if you don\'t find cover, you will die. Since the game is based on finding cover, it needs to work fluently and smoothly, and GoW does just that. Pressing the A button will get you up against cover, and you can peek out and shoot off a few rounds and come back down or you can blind fire or switch your cover by pressing the A button again. It sounds like this might get repetitive but it really doesn\'t. The AI is probably the most intelligent AI in a game I\'ve seen, the Locust can do everything you can do; dash, roll, and switch from cover to cover. The variety of weapons is impressive also. There\'s your everyday Lancer full- auto machine gun equipped with a chainsaw bayonet (>:D), the Hammer of Dawn (a targeting system for a big orbital laser), and the torque bow, which shoots explosive arrows that get lodged in your enemy, along with many other weapons that do fun things. Single player level variety is impressive and not at all repetitive and will challenge you with new tactics to beat enemies, such as little guys that bounce around and try to scratch you, which sounds easy at first, but they get upgraded and they explode when you kill them. This is undoubtedly the best part of this game, as Epic\'s only worked on it for 5 years. Audio: 10/10 Another stellar part of the game is its musical selection. The orchestral music varies in tempo, accelerating when the battle intensifies. The game is unfortunately filled with classic one-liners from the characters, delivering them in a standard FPS style, but they at least don\'t get on your nerves. The voice-acting is superbly done, and not at all boring to listen to. Lasting Appeal: 8/10 The single player will only last you about 8 hours on Casual mode, but since the single-player campaign is fun and engaging, you\'ll find yourself playing it on Hardcore or Insane, doubling and tripling the life of the game, respectively. The multiplayer will keep you going, too, but the limited match options may get stale if you play it for hours on end. Overall, an excellent game, struggling in only a few areas, 10 + 6 + 10 + 10 +8 = 8.8= 90% Screenshots write a review
