There once was a time in which people had to hope and pray that their favorite animes could get a video game made and actually brought over from Japan. If it was brought over one could only hope that the game was of any actual quality.

That process is no longer quite the situation. In fact, anime related games have become quite common. Dragon Ball Z Budokai, Mobile Suit Gundam Journey To Jaburo, Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, the list could go on and on. The only problem with this new influx of anime based gaming is that though the tide of these games is increasing, you still have to worry if it\'s actually a game worth spending your money on or not.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja is such a game. Based on the, of course, very popular anime, it pits you against a number of fellow ninja including Kakashi, Sasuke, Orochimaru, and of course, Naruto, in a two person fighting genre game.

Graphically speaking, this game isn\'t anything too impressive, but then again, until they can make a game that looks like actual anime during game play, the style of cellshading used in this title is about as good as it gets for anime style video gaming.

Control wise, it\'s not hard, but not very articulate. You can hit, charge up your chakra, and do a bit in the way of combos, but it\'s not much different from the control style of Onimusha Blade Warriors, which, though clearly having a better control system than the Onimusha games themselves, still left something to be desired.

Music wise, if it\'s in the show, you\'re probably going to hear it in this game.

One of the fun things about reviewing an anime based video game is getting to nit-pick at how close it is to the anime it originated from. Honestly, Naruto Ultimate Ninja has a lot of features that make it truely close to the anime. All of the Jutsu that the characters use are directly linked to the anime or the manga. Naruto uses clones, Sasuke does his fun little flame throwing jutsus, and, of course, Kakashi uses the secret finger jutsu, which is rather fun to use on serious characters such as Orochimaru.

As far as being revolutionary goes, this title, however, goes nowhere close to the definition of new. Support characters pop up to give you random items that are characteristic of games like this one. Though there is the ability to change levels mid-fight which is entertaining because it does so by the screen zooming out and the world becomes a manga in which the page turns to the new level.

The one truely new thing I noticed in this game, however, that isn\'t in any other Naruto two person fighter I\'ve played (which would be Naruto Clash of Ninja on the Gamecube), is the ability to use the Sharingan or the Byakugan. When active the Sharingan allows your character (of course only Sasuke or Kakashi can use this ability) to mimic the fighting style of the opponent. The Byakugan (limited to Neji and Hinata) allows you to take down your opponent\'s chakra, even if they block.

Overall, I\'d say that this game is great if you\'re a Naruto fan, which I am. If you\'re in the mood for a revolutionary two person fighter to try out, it\'s not perfect, but it\'s far from the worst ever made. It\'s fun and has enough unlockables to keep you busy for a bit if you a gamer. I mean, with goals like cursed mark Sasuke and Nine-Tailed Fox Naruto to work towards, what self-respecting Naruto fan wouldn\'t enjoy the challenge if not just to play as each once. If you\'re a fan, it\'s a keeper. If you\'re just a two person fighter fanatic, it\'s worth a renting.
