![]() iPod + Video Developed By: Apple CpmputersReview By: blue Written on: Saturday, February, 25th, 2006 at 03:52:41 am Rating: 90% Site: here System: iPod + Video Hello good folks at blade2k. Today, we get to see where Apple advances in the DMP market with the fifth installment to the iPod product line, the iPod + Video. There is nothing like an iPod. Now it comes in two colors, white and black. It is sleek, sexy, (and now, slim), unless it is scuffed and scratched. Apple could have done a better job of scratch proofing the screen. The video screen is now .5 inches wider, allowing for widescreen video. Still the same touch wheel, nothing new there. On the top of the iPod, however, the headphone jack has migrated to the right. That, with a combination of the missing plug thingy that was next to the headphones, and a leaner design, makes almost all of the accessories from the fourth generation on down useless. The fact that the iPod can double as a portable HDD almost double its usefulness (however, I am told that this fragments the hard disk, which impacts battery life). Pictures can be stored (and viewed) on the iPod, just like the 4g. Also, the 4k notes and the calendar return with games, stopwatch, and world clock functions. Also, the thing plays videos now. Of course, videos, TV shows, and 'vingles' are available for download through iTunes. But what about your own personal collection of videos? Gratefully, there are many video converters to convert into iPod supported formats (as iPod still doesn’t play well with windows). Unfortunally, however, if you worship the wma/wmv format, the conversion is forever or never for you, but did you really expect it to be fast? Also, with a set of RCA video camera cables, you can watch your videos on TV, with decent quality. No native TV menu, but some 3rd party docks offer a menu with remote functions. Let’s face it; iPod has never been good with battery life. This generation sports up to 14 hours of music playback, 3 hours of slideshows with music, and 2 hours of video playback for the 30GB, and up to 20 hours of music playback, 4 hours of slideshows with music, and 3 hours of video playback for the 60GB version. This is alright, but I kind of expected better from Apple. If the PSP can go 7 hours of video playback, the 60GB can at least do 5. And this is optimal performance of the rechargeable battery. It'll fade slowly throughout the years, slowly degrading performance. Now that all that has been done is out the way, let’s look at what could have been done. Bluetooth (or WiFi for that matter) would have been nice. Very nice. Imagine if you will, wirelessly syncing your library of music, or listening to music with headphones WITHOUT cords. Using a Blackberry (or some other Bluetooth enabled PDA-ish thing), to transfer your files to your iPod for storage. Or how about using your iPod as a remote to stream your music to a stand alone player, or a media center pc? The possibilities with an EXISTING technology could have been wonderful. It's not like they had to invent anything from scratch. It could have been done. Heck, I would have traded a few months and a sliver of thickness to have an iPod with Bluetooth/WiFi. And an internal FM radio tuner would have been nice. Overall, it’s mostly what you have come to expect from Apple. It’s a good mix of style, and a simple interface. Of course, the iPod isn't without its software bugs, but that is what updates are for. Still functioning for music with video coming as a 'new trick' rather then a main part, the fifth generation receives a 90, good, but the little things that could have made it great was absent.
